US Capitol, Washington, D.C.

The capital of the United States, Washington D.C is one of its most important cities. The seat of federal government, many of the nation's main institutions are headquartered here, making it an important venue for business travel.

However, much of the nation's historical monuments also lie within the city, making Washington D.C a popular tourist destination as well. As far as the city's landmarks go, the White House, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jeferson Memorial are some of the more popular tourist destinations.

The friends and families of military personnel, on the other hand, frequently visit the city's many war memorials, where many of the nation's fallen veterans are remembered.
History buffs visiting D.C will quickly realise that they've arrived at history central. A visit to the Library of Congress or the National Archives will give you information on virtually every aspect of American history, with some exciting exhibits being found here, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Of course, historical monuments and documents aside, there is a lot to do in the city. From the famous Smithsonian Institution, which features many free museums within its premises, to the National Museum of the American Indian, and the National Portrait Gallery, numerous other museums scattered throughout the city, making certain that no visitor will ever be bored on a walk through it.

The performing arts too are represented strongly in the nation's capital. Home to the Shakespeare Theatre Company, one of the world's most renowned Shakespeare troupes, D.C's theatre stage is rich and active. Featuring such locations as the National Theatre, and the John F. Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts, the city is home to the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera and the Washington Ballet, all three reputed groups in their respective disciplines.

A city of history, and power, Washington D.C is a storehouse of knowledge and culture. Offering visitors a wide slice of American history and culture, it strives to truly represent the nation it directs.
