Seattle, WA
The largest city in the Pacific Northwest of the US, Seattle is a coastal port city that lies in between an arm of the Pacific Ocean and Lake Washington. Inhabited for at least 4,000 years, the first permanent white settlers arrived in 1851.
Best known as the birthplace of grunge music, the city was home to many of the iconic artists of the 1990s including Nirvana, The Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney. However, grunge is not the only genre that Seattle boasts of. Other musicians such as the avante-garde jazz performers Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz, the rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot also call Seattle home. Even the rock 'n roll legend Jimmy Hendrix spent his formative years in the city, making it clear why Seattle is such a big stop on the US music circuit.
This is not to say however, that the traditional musical arts have been ignored by the city. The Seattle Symphony Orchestra is over a hundred years old, and is at present one of the world's most recorded orchestras. The Seattle Opera and the Pacific Northwest Ballet are also well renowned in performing arts circles. If the theatre is more your thing, you'll definitely want to drop by the 5th Avenue Theatre, which, since 1926, has hosted a plethora of different Broadway-style musical shows featuring both local talent and international stars.
The casual sightseer too will not be disappointed, with structures such as the Space Needle, the Seattle Centre Monorail, and the Smith Tower all being must sees on a walk through the city. Other notable landmarks include the Washington Mutual Tower, Pike Place Market, the Fremont Troll and the Experience Music Project. This is not to say however, that the list of tourist attractions stops here. The National Register of Historic Places has over a hundred and fifty listings for Seattle, so be sure to look it up before you visit.
Although a city that has a rich musical heritage, Seattle's attractions go far beyond just jazz and grunge. Whether you're in the city for business or pleasure, rest assured that there will always be something to see in quiet, sleepy, Seattle.
