San Francisco, CA
One of the most densely populated cities in the US, San Francisco finds its roots as a Spanish settlement in the late 18th century.
Known for such historic landmarks as the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz Island, San Francisco is one of America’s most famous cities, and certainly one of its most iconic destinations in terms of scenery. Situated on the bund of the beautiful San Francisco Bay, the city looks out over the Pacific Ocean, making for mild winters.
Home to many different parades and street festivals, San Francisco is a lively city, and most residents make use of the good weather to venture outside a lot. Cycling is one of the most popular forms of transport, and indeed, most tourists will enjoy at least a little bicycle time while in the city.
San Francisco transportation would not be what it is if not for the streetcar. While in town, be sure to catch a ride on the F Market streetcar line, which operates from Castro Street down to Fisherman's Wharf. Of course, the city's cable car system is also definitely worth a look.
From the San Francisco Symphony to the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Ballet, the city has a strong background in performance arts, with all three of these groups calling the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Centre their own.
The city has also been quite influential on the American music scene. Hosting influential trends, such as the San Francisco Sound movement in the sixties, the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, two of the era's most popular bands, started out in San Francisco. Today, the city is home to a growing rap culture, with popular rap artists such as RBL Posse, San Quinn and Messy Marv calling it home.
In terms of tourist attractions, the Civic Centre, Telegraph Hill, and of course the Golden Gate Bridge, are sights you simply cannot miss on a tour of the city.
One of California's most interesting locales, San Francisco is a lively city with a mild climate. With sunshine most of the year round, and plenty to see and do, it's a great stop for any variety of visitors.
