Reno, NV
The fourth largest city in Nevada, Reno is often called "The Biggest Little City in the World", and like other cities in the state, was once most famous for its casinos.
With the rise of Las Vegas however, Reno's gaming scene began to decline, and today, many of its older casinos have been either torn down, or converted to other buildings. However, larger hotel casinos such as the Atlantis, the Peppermill and the Grand Sierra Resort still remain.
With a lot of investment taking place around its avid nightlife, Reno's most famous after dark district lies downtown on West 1st and 2nd, between Arlingon and Sierra. The more popular bars and clubs found in this area include Imperial Lounge, Sierra Tap House, Se7en, Tonic, El Cortez Lounge, Five Star Saloon, and the West 2nd Street Bar. Recently, the Grand Sierra Resort also opened Nikki Beach, a trendy chain of poolside clubs that are drawing crowds.
As far as concerts, plays and shows go, the Bruka Theatre, and the Reno Events Centre are the places to visit. The latter in particular is a 7,500 seat arena that in 2008 will be home to Reno's new NBA Development League team. Of course, hardcore theatre buffs will definitely want to check out the Nevada Shakespeare Company, an activist theatre that advocates, and encourages Universal Access.
Of course, Reno is a great city for taking a stroll through as well. From the National Automobile Museum, to the Nevada Museum of Art, and Reno Arboretum of the University of Nevada, the city offers a number of different attractions for the casual visitor. Of course, if you're wondering when to come go too Reno, you might want to consider timing your visit with Artown, an annual arts festival organized by the city council, and usually held in July.
A gaming city that has been diversifying its interests for a while, Reno has a little bit of everything, making it the ideal getaway for a weekend of fun. Managing to be a little less crowded than Vegas, while preserving much of the same atmosphere, the city is a great destination for both business and leisure.
