Portland, OR
With a population of over 500,000 people, Portland is Oregon's largest city, and third largest in the Pacific Northwest. Incorporated in 1851, the city is known for its strong public transport system, and of course, its rose gardens, for which it has been named The City of Roses.
Featuring a mild climate with mild summers, and rainy, but temperate winters, Portland is a city of the outdoors. From Forest Park, which covers over 5,000 acres, to Mill Ends Park, the world's smallest park at only two feet in diameter, the city has a wide range of parks and outdoor attractions for visitors. Of course, one of the most popular destinations is Washington Park. Situated just west of downtown, it's home to the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japanese Garden, and the International Rose Test Garden, all sites of tourist interest.
Performing arts enthusiasts will be happy to note that major organizations such as the Oregon Ballet Theatre, Oregon Symphony and the Portland Opera all find their home in Portland. As far as theatre goes, Portland Centre Stage, Artist Repertory Theatre and Stumptown Stages are just some of the many companies that perform in and around the city. Visual arts enthusiasts, on the other hand, will want to visit the Portland Art Museum, which, with the addition of a Modern and Contemporary Art, became one of the United States' top twenty five museums.
Portland is also well known for its many microbreweries. With over twenty five breweries, the city has more than Cologne, Germany, a fact that some say make it a candidate for "beer capital of the world". While beer connoisseurs will definitely want to sample at least a few of the city's blends, the diehards will definitely want to time their visit to coincide with the Oregon Brewers Festival, which is usually held in July.
Roses, beer and theatre, an eclectic combination from a city that certainly has something in store for everyone. With mild weather all year round, Portland is a great place to experience the outdoors, catch the ballet or some theatre, and indeed, enjoy some very special beer.
