Phoenix, AZ
The capital of Arizona, Phoenix has a population of over 1.5 million, making it the fifth largest city in the United States. Sitting in an arid climate, the city features hot summers and temperate winters, so the timing of your visit is important, depending on what your climate tastes are.
Of course, the city has sunshine most of the year round, and since rainfall is scarce, makes it a great location for outdoor recreation. Due to the Arizona heat, many water parks are scattered around the valley, and tourists would be well advised to make use of these, especially if visiting in the summer. Some of the more notable parks include the Big Surf, the Waterworld Safari and the Oasis Water Park at Pointe South Mountain Resort.
Preserving the desert landscape is also one of Phoenix's top priorities, as is seen by the many parks that have been established to this end. The South Mountain Park, which covers 16,500 acres, is one of the more famous municipal parks, with other prominent locations being Camelback Mountain and Sunnyslope Mountain.
Of course, if parks aren't your thing, you could always drop by the Phoenix Zoo, or check out one of the city's golf courses.
The city's performing arts circuit too is well developed, with venues such as the Phoenix Symphony Hall hosting groups such as the Arizona Opera and Ballet Arizona. Concerts also make stops in the city, and often make use of the US Airways Centre, situated in downtown Phoenix.
In terms of museums, the city's most famous is undoubtedly the Heard Museum, which attracts over 250,000 visitors a year.
Although not reputed as a film destination, several movies have been shot in Phoenix, including, most famously, Jerry Maguire, Song of the South, and of course, Raising Arizona, something which fans may want to follow up.
A dry, arid city with a lively, active environment, Phoenix is the perfect destination for visitors who enjoy the outdoors. Of course, if you prefer a more quiet stay, Phoenix's art and culture circuit will be more than accommodative.
