Philadelphia, PA
The largest city in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia was the nation's first capital, and the largest city in the early United States. Now home to over 1.4 million people, "Philly", as it is affectionately called, was once the second largest city in the British Empire.
Home to many of the primary events surrounding the American Revolution, it played a vital role in the struggle for independence, and houses many historic sites and buildings. From the Independence National Historical Park, to the Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed, Philadelphia is home to many of the cornerstones of early America. Other important sites of historic interest include the First and Second Banks of the United States, and the homes of Edgar Allan Poe and Betsy Ross.
A vibrant, cosmopolitan city, Philly is home to a lot of contemporary art and culture. A metropolis that has always had a strong focus on art, Philadelphia's fine art roots can be traced as far back as the opening of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1805. Famous as a breeding ground for talent, Thomas Eakins, Henry Ossawa Tanner and several members of the Philadelphia Ten came from this tradition. Furthermore, the fact that Philadelphia has more public art than any other American city is seen as a testament to its long standing commitment to art.
Of course, music is another important part of Philly culture. The Academy of Music was founded by the Musical Fund Society in 1857, and is now home to many of the city's most popular performing arts groups, including the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Philly Pops, a music group who play orchestral versions of popular jazz, blues and Broadway songs.
A city that is deeply rooted in the American past, and yet lives vibrantly in the present, Philadelphia merges contemporary culture with a rich history, and in the process creates a city that is a pleasure to stay in, no matter what the purpose of your visit is.
