Perth, Australia
The largest city in Western Australia, Perth is the financial hub of the Western Australia. Listed as one of the world's most livable cities by The Economist magazine in 2008, Perth became world famous as the “City of Lights” when residents turned on all their street and houselights as the American astronaut John Glen passed overhead in 1962, a feat which the city repeated for the same astronaut as he passed over the city again in 1998, this time in a space shuttle.
If you're looking to sample some of the city's culture while in Perth, you'll definitely want to drop by the Perth Cultural Centre, the collective name for an area which is home to artistic landmarks such as the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Western Australian Museum and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. Art enthusiasts, of course, would do well to time their visit to the city to coincide with the annual Perth International Arts Festival, which has been held in the city since 1953. Perth Concert Hall is the main performing arts venue in the city, and hosts most large ballet, theatre, opera and symphony performances. Music enthusiasts will be pleased to note that the city has a strong local music tradition, and some even call it the “new Seattle,” hinting at just how diverse the local musical talent is.
Of course, as a major city in a sports crazy nation should, Perth also boasts many sports related attractions. With several Cricket, Rugby and Australian Football teams calling Perth their home, the city is well represented in all major Australian sports, and sports enthusiasts will definitely want to catch a game or two with the local team while in town.
Whether you're in town for a day or a week, be sure to experience at least a little slice of Perth. The pride of Western Australia, and certainly its center, the city is home to culture, sport, music and a whole lot more. From arrival to departure, the city is sure to entertain you, so don't miss out on the chance to experience a truly different side of Australia.
