Mardi Gras, New Orleans

One of America's oldest and most vibrant cities, New Orleans lies on the bank of the Mississippi River, a little over a hundred miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico.

An amalgamation of French, American and Creole cultures, the city has a rich tradition of cultural diversity that extends in to culture, cuisine and beyond.

As a tourist destination, it's hard to find a location more lively and colourful than New Orleans. When looking at the situations that lend the city its flavour however, the most obvious even that comes to mind is the famed Mardi Gras, New Orleans' own annual carnival.

Other annual events such as the Sugar Bowl, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival or Jazz Fest as it is commonly known, Southern Decadence and the Essence Music Festival are all large annual events that the city runs in order to sustain its tourists. As one of the top ten most visited cities in the US, New Orleans' economy relies heavily on tourism, and therefore the city goes to great lengths to keep them entertained.

Apart from these yearly spectacles however, there are also many other places of interest within the city. From experiencing the city's nightlife on Bourbon Street, to exploring the stately 19th century buildings on St. Charles Avenue, the city has a wide cross section of tourist sites. Magazine Street, for example, has many historic antique shops, and therefore is certainly worth an afternoon wandering in the least.

Of course, New Orleans wouldn't be New Orleans without its music. Stemming from a unique combination of European instruments and African instruments, the city gave birth to its own unique form of music, a genre we today call jazz. Today one of the most popular forms of music in the world, it is easy to see how something as lively and passionate as jazz grew out of this truly unique blend of cultures.

A city that celebrates its diversity, and rejoices in the mixed nature of its history, New Orleans is a city where cultures meet and combine to bring about something that is truly beautiful.
