Memphis, TN
Tennessee's largest, and indeed, one of its most influential cities, Memphis was named after the ancient capital of Egypt.
A city that based its early economy on the cotton and lumber industries, in the 1960s it played a part in several events that affected the civil rights movement, including, most tragically, the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
A Mid-South city, it contributed a great deal to the Southern cultural identity, and is most noted for its blues music. Many famous blues performers grew up around Memphis, including legends such as Muddy Waters, B.B King and Robert Johnson. Of course, the blues wasn't Memphis' only contribution to music. The city also contributed greatly to other genres such as Gospel, Rock n' Roll and Country music. Needless to say, the city was also home to Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, two of American music's most famous names.
Speaking of Elvis, a visit to Memphis just wouldn't be complete without a visit to Graceland, the former home of the legend himself. Attracting over 600,000 visitors a year, it is one of the most visited houses in the country, and for good reason too -
The city, of course, has more than just musical history to offer its visitors. The National Civil Rights Museum, located in the former Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, features a historical overview of the African American struggle for freedom that Memphis played such a tragic role in.
Of course, if you're looking for a lighter afternoon, the city also includes many parks such as the Tom Lee Park, the Overton Park and the Memphis Botanic Garden, all excellent choices for a quiet stroll. Animal lovers will of course want to check out the Memphis Zoo, found downtown, and sports fans may want to catch one of the city's numerous professional sports teams in action.
A city with history, and then some, Memphis is calm, and beautiful, like the blues that has defined it for so long. Although you don't have to be a music fan to find interest in this city, it's safe to say that having a feel for melody will certainly help.
