Las Vegas, NV
Often called the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas is famous for its casino resorts, unrestricted alcohol, and adult entertainment. Popular as a destination for movies and TV programs, this is one city that will never leave you bored.
Travelled through as early as the 19th century, and even named by Spanish travellers, Las Vegas is one of the most famous cities of the American West. Starting off as a railroad town in 1905, the city legalized gambling in 1931, and in 1946, with the opening of the first hotel on Las Vegas Boulevard, set the foundation for the future of Vegas. The Boulevard, now commonly referred to as the Las Vegas Strip, houses some of America's most famous casinos, including the Golden Nugget, the Fremont Casino, the Plaza Hotel & Casino and the Las Vegas Club.
Of course, there is a lot to do apart from gambling in Vegas. From the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, to the Floyd Lamb State Park, Vegas has a number of outdoor areas that make for great strolling. The city's music scene too is quite developed, with several notable bands including The Killers, Panic! at the Disco, The Higher and Escape The Fate starting out there. Although the city has no major-league sports teams, a number of high profile one-time events have been held there, including the NBA 2007 All-Star Game, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup series.
In recent years, Vegas has also been hyped as a major shopping destination, a move that some hope will help diversify the city, moving the focus away from pure gambling. Malls such as the Bonanza Gift Store, The Boulevard Mall and the Fashion Show Mall all provide a varied shopping experience, and of course, most casinos on the strip also offer many shopping options.
The chances are that you're coming to Vegas for the gaming. However, in the rush to get your chips, don't forget that the city is larger than just the Strip. With an avid nightlife, and a large metropolitan area, there is certainly more to Vegas than meets the eye at first glance.
