The largest city in Texas, and the fourth largest in America, Houston has a population of over two million, and a total area of over 600 square miles.
A multicultural city with a large and growing international community, with much of the area's foreign born population being from south of the United States-Mexico border.
In 1967, the city was nicknamed Space City, and for good reason too - NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Centre is located there, and this makes it a must stop on any space fanatics run through America.
However, there is obviously more to Houston than its connection to outer space. The city also has a vibrant visual and performing arts scene, with its Theatre District being home to nine performing arts organizations and six performance halls.
One of the few US cities with professional, resident companies in all of the major performing arts disciplines, Houston is home to the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Ballet, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, and the Alley Theatre, all giants in their respective fields.
Of course, the visual arts are another major part of Houston's culture. From the prestigious Bayou City Art Festival, to the Museum District, which attracts more than 7 million visitors a year, visitors to the city will be able to enjoy the work of a wide range of artists.
Casual visitors on the other hand will want to drop in at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Houston Zoo, both great ways to spend an afternoon in the city.
Houston's music scene, though small, is widespread, and you will find many small venues that host rock, blues, country and Tejano artists and bands. A strong Southern flavour of hip hop, often called Houston hip hop, is also popular in the city, and has spawned a lively independent music scene, something which music lovers may want to get a taste of while they're in town.
All in all, Houston is a beacon of the south, and one of America's most dynamic cities, making it a great location for business and pleasure alike. From science, to the theatre, and music, the city is a fusion of cultures and tastes, making it an experience that simply cannot be missed.
