Honolulu, HI
Meaning "sheltered bay" in the Hawaiian language, Honolulu is the only incorporated city in Hawaii, and along with the island of Oahiu, lie at its very centre. Most famous as a surfing destination, the tropical climate of the city is regulated by the California Current, making it cooler than it should be for most of the year.
The most obvious stop on a run through Honolulu is of course Wakiki Beach. The shoreline of Wakiki, it is one of the most famous beaches in the world, and extends from the Ala Wai Canal in the west to Diamond Head in the east. A place of relaxation for centuries, the beach was even a retreat for Hawaiian royalty in the 19th century. While the water is shallow for some distance out, making it great for waders, half of the bay is also marked off for surfers, making it a great destination no matter what kind of ocean experience you prefer. Since 2001, there have been free movies shown at the beach on a thirty foot outdoor screen. Called 'Sunset on the Beach,' this feature will no doubt be a fitting finale to a relaxing day in the sun.
Speaking of movies though, the visual and performing arts are also strongly represented in Honolulu. Established in 1900, the Honolulu Symphony is one of the oldest orchestras in the US, with the Hawaii Opera Theatre being another music ensemble to look out for. If art is more your thing, a visit to the Honolulu Academy of Arts is certainly recommended, as it features a large collection of both Asian and Western art. The Contemporary Museum is the only one of its kind in the state, and is spread out across two locations - its main campus in Makiki and a multi-level gallery at the First Hawaiian Centre in downtown Honolulu.
Thus, whether you're in Hawaii for the sun and sand, or just stopping by for one of the many conferences it hosts each year, the city of Honolulu has a wide variety of attractions to keep you occupied during your stay. While Wakiki beach is certainly a must see, it is best not to forget that the city, and indeed the islands, have more to offer than just a beautiful view of the ocean.
