A special administrative region of China, Hong Kong has been the centre of the East for many years. A derivative of the Cantonese for 'fragrant harbour', the city was one of the most important ports of the British Empire during its time, today retains its status as a major transport hub. With the sixth largest stock exchange in the world, the city is also a major financial centre, and was called one of the Four Asian Tigers because of the rapid industrialisation it underwent in the latter part of the 20th century.
A city that boasts a wide and varied cultural history, Hong Kong has for decades boasted a vibrant mix of the East and the West, and despite being released from colonial rule in 1997, is still home to some uniquely British characteristics such as a traditional English morris dancing team. This amalgamation of the East and the West also extends into the city's cuisine, with dim sum or da bin lo restaurants being found in the same vicinity as famous Western fast food chains.
Hong Kong, of course, wouldn't be Hong Kong without its vibrant film and entertainment industry. Having produced stars like Bruce Lee, Chow Yun-Fat, and Jackie Chan, the Hong Kong kung fu movie is a genre in itself, and has influenced a myriad of film makers and schools the world over. If film isn't your thing however, rest assured that the city also boasts many other fine arts venues, including the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
