Florence, Italy
The capital city of Tuscany, and the one of the most popular destinations in Italy, and indeed, all of Europe, Florence was a centre of trade in medieval Europe, and influential throughout the Middle Ages. Of course, it is perhaps most famous as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. From a wonderful climate, to art, cuisine and culture, Florence is the quintessential European city, and a visit to Italy would certainly not be complete without a stopover in this historic destination.
Famous for its Tuscan dialect, Florence's residents speak the parent language of Italian. Watch for the distinctive Florentine accent as you wander through the city, looking to sample some of its tripe, or famous steak. Continuing from a peasant tradition, the food of the region is rich in olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and of course, salami.
In terms of economy, Florence flourishes as a tourist attraction. During the tourist season, which roughly falls between April and October every year, the city's residents are vastly outnumbered by tourists, and tickets for the major attractions get quickly sold out.
Florence, of course, would not be Florence without its art. From the The Bargello Tower to the chapels of the Medicis, and Buonarroti's house, which houses Michaelangelo's sculptures, the city has so much in terms of art that visitors to the city sometimes get Stendhal syndrome. The condition, which is said to arise when people are exposed to large quantities of art, is a psychosomatic illness in which one experiences dizziness, confusion and at times even hallucinations.
Of course, the capital of Tuscany is also a great doorway into wine country. Just south of the city is the famous Chianti region, famous for its Sangiovese grapes which go into the world renown Chianti Classico wines. To the west, the Carmignano is also a major wine region, and is certainly worth a visit if you are a wine buff.
Whether you're in Tuscany for the wine or in Florence for the art and culture, the city and its surrounding countryside has much to offer you. One of the oldest, and indeed, most picturesque regions in Europe, Florence will show you a side of Italy that has attracted visitors for hundreds of years.
