Edinburgh, UK
The old beating heart of Scotland, Edinburgh is its capital city, and its second largest metropolis in terms of size. The seat of the Scottish Parliament, and a major academic centre, the city is also well known for the annual Edinburgh Festival it hosts. Not a festival in itself, but rather an umbrella term for a number of festivals that take place in the city during August every year, the Edinburgh Festival is one of the city's key attractions, and visitors would do well to make their visit coincide with one or many of the smaller festivals it entails.
Culture, of course, is something that the city has an abundance of. From the Museum of Scotland, to the Royal Museum and the National Library of Scotland, the city has enough museums and libraries to keep even the most demanding history buff informed and entertained. Declared the first UNESCO City of Literature, Edinburgh was also home to writing greats such as James Boswell, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir Walter Scott, and more recently, J. K. Rowling. Theatre fans will be happy to note that the city's Royal Lyceum Theatre has its own theatre company, and that other theatres such as the Edinburgh Festival Theatre frequently host travelling shows. If drama is your thing, then don't forget to watch a play or two while you're in town.
Of course, for those who prefer a night out on the town to an evening at the theatre, the capital of Scotland also has a vibrant nightlife. From the Grassmarket to Lothian Road and Rose Street, the city boasts a wide selection of pubs, clubs and restaurants.
If animals are more your thing though, make sure you check out the Edinburgh Zoo. Scotland's most popular paid-for tourist attraction after Edinburgh Castle, the Zoo itself is involved in many conservation programmes worldwide, and is definitely worthy of your support. From culture, to nightlife and conservation, Edinburgh is a beautiful mix of the traditional and the contemporary, and is in every way an ideal destination for the traveller who is looking to experience the best of both worlds.
