The automotive centre of the world, Detroit, or 'Motown as it is affectionately, known, is one of the largest cities in the Midwest. With close to a million residents, it is truly a cosmopolitan city, and one that is certainly worth exploring.
As far as tourist attractions go, the city has many, including the Motown Historical Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and the Eastern Market, a farmer's distribution centre that features the largest open-air flowerbed market in the US. Held yearly since 1907 the North American International Auto Show is the city's yearly homage to the automobile, and car buffs will definitely want to plan their visit so it coincides with this.
Home to many professional sports teams, it's no wonder that the city boasts of five major sporting venues. From Comerica Park, home of MLB's Detroit Tigers, to Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions, and the Joe Louis Arena, home of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, sports fans will be delighted by the cross-section of adrenaline fuelled fun that the city has to offer.
Of course, Detroit wouldn't be called Motown if not for its avid live music scene. Between the DTE Energy Music Theatre and the Palace of Auburn Hills, the city is home to a wide variety of Blues and Jazz musicians. Founded by Berry Gordy, Jr, the city's Motown Records was once home to artists of the likes of Steve Wonder, Diana Ross and the Jackson 5.
Of course, music lovers will also definitely want to be Motorcity during the Memorial Day weekend to experience the sights, and more importantly the sounds of the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, an electronic dance music exhibition held annually in the city.
