Brisbane, Australia

The capital of the state of Queensland, Brisbane is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. Home to many top Australian universities such as the University of Queensland, the Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University, the city is a regional education hub. A city with a strong research focus, the city government has invested heavily in fields such as biotechnology, and this in turn is beginning to become a driving force in the city's economy.

Whether you're in the city for research or business however, there's a good chance that you'll want to experience some of its art and culture as well. From the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in South Bank, to the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art which is found in the same precinct, Brisbane certainly isn't found lacking when it comes to aesthetics. The city is also home to many annual festivals including the Ekka, also called the Royal Queensland Show, and the Riverfestival, both of which visitors would do good to experience.

As for sightseeing, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the world's first Koala sanctuary, is a must stop if you're into animals, or even if you're just intrigued by the out of the ordinary. Of course, more regular sights are also available in the form of the Brisbane Forest Park and the Portside Wharf, both of which make for interesting walking.

Sports fans will be pleased to know that Brisbane is a city with a rich sporting tradition, including hosting the 1987 Rugby World Cup, the 1992 Cricket World Cup and the 2000 Sydney Olympics. From Rugby to Cricket and beyond Brisbane has an avid sporting culture, and fans should definitely catch a game or two while in town.

From education, to business, and leisure, the city has attractions for every kind of traveller, and the city is sure to inform and entertain you throughout your stay. The centre of Queensland, Brisbane is one city that will certainly not leave you wanting.
