Atlanta, GA
The state capital of Georgia, Atlanta has the fastest growing metropolitan area in America. A historic city in every sense of the word, its citizens played a key part in the civil rights movement of the sixties, and thereby became one of the first southern cities to have a progressive record with regard to desegregation.
One of only three US cities to have hosted the Summer Olympic Games, Atlanta takes its sports very seriously. Featuring the oldest on-campus Division I sports stadium the Bobby Dodd Stadium, the city also hosts many annual sporting events including college football's Chik-fil-A Bowl, and the Peachtree Road Race, the largest 10km road race in the world. Needless to say, the city is also represented in all four major league sports, with support for the Braves, Falcons, Hawks and Thrashers being solid and unwavering.
Of course, sports aren’t the only thing that the city is known for. Its role in the civil rights movement is remembered via such landmarks as the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Site. The city's other history-related museums include the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum, and the Atlanta History Centre, both of which are worth at least a casual afternoon visit.
Of course, the arts are also represented strongly in the city. From the famous Fox Theatre to the Woodruffs Art Centre, Atlanta has a number of noteworthy playhouses. The latter, in fact, is home to the Tony Award winning Alliance Theatre and the Atlas Symphony. Founded in 1979 with the merger of two struggling local companies, the Atlanta Opera is now one of the most vibrant opera companies in the nation.
Animal and nature lovers of course will want to visit the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world, and those interested in architecture will want to see the Atlantic Station, a massive urban renewal project taking place within the city.
A city of sport, art and culture, Atlanta is a great destination for any type of traveller. Indeed, from baseball, to opera, it really doesn't get more eclectic than this.
