The capital of the Netherlands, and indeed its largest city, Amsterdam has been an important European city for centuries. Founded as a fishing village, the settlement grew to become the centre of the Dutch Empire during its Golden Era, and during that time was arguably the most important port in the world. The Stopera, which derives its name from the city hall being adjoined by the opera house of Amsterdam, is home to the performing arts groups De Nederlandse Opera, Het Nationale Ballet and the Holland Symfonia, and visitors to the city would do well to not miss a performance of theirs.
